CEILING SPOTS

CAUSES

Spots are caused by leaks in the roof

RECOMMENDATIONS

Check attic for leaks in deck
Check chimney and vents for cracks in flashing
Check rafters for leaks that "travel" away from original source
Check eaves for water backing up from ice dams
Check roof for damaged shingles

CAUSES

Improper installation on a new roof
Damaged or missing caulking
Drying and cracking on an old roof

RECOMMENDATIONS

In most cases it is only necessary to remove and replace the flashing and shakes around the damaged area

CAUSES

Improper fastening
Wind damage
Deterioration of shakes

RECOMMENDATIONS

In most cases the missing shakes can be replaced individually, be sure to check exposed interlayment for damage before replacing the shake

CAUSES

Water absorption (in wood or fiber-reinforced shake)

RECOMMENDATIONS

Replace shake, be sure to check exposed interlayment for damage before replacing the shake
Adding proper roof ventilation at time of installation, to prevent curling

SPLITTING

CAUSES

Can be the result of natural aging
Condition is aggravated by water infiltration in wood, cement tile or fiber- reinforced cement (FRC) shakes
Can result from stress on the shake, like walking on it
Excessive foot traffic on roof
Problem is compounded in damp climates and areas with repeated freezing and thawing

RECOMMENDATIONS

Cut out and replace damaged shakes be sure to check exposed interlayment for damage before replacing the shake
Caulk smaller cracks

MOSS/ALGAE GROWTH

CAUSES

Air-borne algae deposits and grows on roof which can affect long-term performance
Wood shakes are particularly susceptible to moss/algae growth
Occurs most often in damp and/or humid climates or in shaded areas of the roof

RECOMMENDATIONS

Replace with algae resistant shake

Shake materials that provide sustenance for termites - particularly wood

Exterminate by tenting and fumigating home
