Roofing and Asphalt

Owens Corning was the first to develop and commercialize the fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingle. These shingles offer a wide range of benefits:

  • Fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingles last longer than the shingles made with an organic substrate.
  • Glass fibers don’t absorb moisture, so the shingles perform better on a home’s roof.
  • Shingles made with fiberglass substrate earn a Class A fire rating.

For storm impacted areas, Owens Corning also makes a high performance line of shingles with a 130-mile-per-hour wind resistance rating.

In addition for use in shingles, Owens Corning processes asphalt for low-slope built-up roofing used on commercial buildings. An innovative product incorporates low-fuming technology to reduce job-site emissions.

We’ve also earned patents for our technological advances in controlling emissions generated during manufacturing. These patents include our regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) and additive technologies to reduce NOx and SOx emissions. We have developed products and procedures in our asphalt cutback operations that reduce emissions by as much as 85%.
