Earth Day and what lies ahead

I’m proud to be CEO of a company that makes sustainability a central part of our values as well as our strategy. Our purpose is for our people and our products to make the world a better place. Right now, during the coronavirus pandemic, the company has an immediate responsibility to help people – our own employees and those around us, including our families, our communities, and all our other stakeholders – and that’s our focus.

We decided months ago to release our 2019 Sustainability Report on Earth Day. In fact, this week we marked the 50th Earth Day, and it seemed very fitting to talk about how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go as we reflect on that milestone. For 50 years, a global movement has been growing, led by people who care deeply about protecting and improving the ecosystem that supports all life. Companies have a critical role to play in that mission, and Owens Corning is committed to doing our part.

With the urgent needs of the present evident all around us as people and communities around the world contend with the impact of the virus, Earth Day resonates with new importance. I’ve been thinking a lot about how the coronavirus has made clear all the ways we are connected to one another, and how we’ve had to think differently about how far our influence extends. Each of us makes decisions about how to get through each day that can impact the people around us and in faraway places. That awareness can guide us to work collectively for the good of all.

In that context, it’s still a fitting time to share Owens Corning’s sustainability progress and aspirations – even more fitting. The report we released this week is the way we share our results to date and our long-term commitments. It’s our pledge to work to solve issues that matter now, and to do so with a constant determination to make the world better for the future. As I’ve said elsewhere, sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present while making the world a better place for the future, and we are all accountable to find ways to do both. Earth Day is a good time to remember that.
